The Most Important Story You’ll Ever Tell Is the One You Tell Yourself

What if the most powerful story you’ll ever write is the one you tell yourself?

At Becoming Love Project, we believe the stories we tell ourselves shape how we see the world, what we believe we’re capable of, and ultimately, who we become.

For many young adults, those stories have been shaped by circumstances beyond their control. Experiences of instability, rejection, disappointment, or simply not having someone believe in them can influence how they see themselves and their future.

But what if those experiences didn’t have to define what comes next?

That’s the question at the heart of our Youth Storytelling Program.

It Starts From Within

Our program uses storytelling and filmmaking as tools for something much deeper: self-discovery, emotional awareness, and personal transformation.

We invite young adults to examine the beliefs they’ve developed about themselves, recognize how their experiences may have shaped those beliefs, and begin imagining new possibilities.

Because there is a difference between responding to what life has handed you and intentionally deciding what you want to believe about yourself and your future.

Write What You Want to Believe.

While we may not have control over everything that happens to us, we can begin to choose what we believe about ourselves and what’s possible for our future.

Our guiding philosophy encourages participants to develop a new relationship with their experiences and make conscious choices about who they want to become.

And sometimes, that transformation begins with something as simple as putting pen to paper.

From Finding Their Voice to Finding Their Purpose

This year, our inaugural cohort of young storytellers embarked on a journey that took them from the writing room to a professional film set.

They explored their ideas, developed stories, collaborated with industry professionals, and participated in bringing a feature film to life.

But some of the most meaningful moments happened beyond the cameras.

FINDING PURPOSE

Yomari’s Story

Yomari shared that she entered the program unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. By the end of the experience, she felt she had discovered her purpose.

DISCOVERING HER VOICE

Kyriah’s Story

Kyriah spoke about discovering her voice and recognizing that she had one worth sharing.

These are the moments that remind us why this work matters.

Yes, participants gain creative and technical skills. Yes, they’re introduced to career pathways and professional opportunities. But our greatest hope is that they leave with something they can carry into every area of their lives:

a stronger belief in themselves.

A Story Worth Celebrating

On November 14, we’ll gather for the Heart Awards & Fundraising Gala and an exclusive red carpet screening of The Way Back Home, a feature film created through our 2026 Youth Storytelling Program.

The film explores themes of identity, healing, family, and the courage to rediscover yourself. In many ways, those themes reflect the very work we’re doing with our young people.

For our fellows, this evening represents more than seeing a film on the big screen. It’s an opportunity to celebrate what they helped create, the relationships they built, and the possibilities they’ve begun to see for themselves.

And for our community, it’s a chance to witness what becomes possible when young people are given the space, support, and encouragement to believe in themselves.

The Story Continues

As we prepare to celebrate this year’s accomplishments, we’re also looking ahead to 2027 and the next chapter of our Youth Storytelling Program.

We’re expanding the experience into a 24-week apprenticeship that will continue combining personal development, storytelling, mentorship, and hands-on filmmaking.

Because the goal has never been simply to make a movie.

It’s to help young people recognize that their past does not have to determine their future, that their voices matter, and that they have the power to become more than they’ve ever imagined.

And that is a story worth telling.
